Halifax celebrities dish on potholes

Storm after storm hasn't helped the pothole situation in Halifax.

It’s been a stormy winter in Halifax, and the freeze thaw cycle has meant potholes, which are now drawing the attention of Nova Scotian celebrity influencers.

The city says its staff has repaired approximately 2,000 potholes just since January with another 1,650 reported.

First it was singer Anne Murray, who chimed in on Facebook and said: “I’m going to get some sand for my car so I can start filling the potholes in the streets of Halifax.”

Then it was internet famous diver Saltwater Sean who posted a photo of him scuba diving in a pothole.

“The frequency of storms we’ve had this winter hasn’t helped the city in their efforts to repair them, because of course you can’t fill a pothole when it’s already covered in snow so you need a break in the weather so crews can get out there,” Jake Fulton, a spokesperson for The City of Halifax, tells me.

“Until the roads are clear, crews are unable to patch the potholes.”

The repairs being made now are only temporary.

"During the colder months, asphalt plants aren’t open, so the permanent hot asphalt we would normally use to repair roads isn’t available." Fulton says.

"We use a cold patch asphalt as a temporary material to fill them in until we can get in there with the permanent fix during the warmer months."

In the case of the early onset of potholes, the only thing to blame is the weather.
