Ducks waddle through school after nesting in courtyard
Officials guided the ducks through the school so they could navigate to a stream behind the building
Nestled in a pair of enclosed courtyards of a Burlington school, two mama ducks waited for weeks to hear the pitter-patter of webbed feet.
After a decade of only one mama nesting in the school, another duck followed her lead and set up house in the school’s second courtyard.
It’s not lost on school officials that the arrival of these ducklings is not only a learning experience, but a chance to teach students compassion.

The school set up a webcam so they can keep an eye on the family, and so that people around the globe can watch.
It takes about 12 hours from the time the last duckling hatches for the mama to be ready to relocate the family.
When the big day for the first family of ducks arrived, officials guided the ducks through the school so they could navigate to a stream behind the building.
It’s a good reminder for all of us that schools are a place of safety for young ones to grow—whether they have webbed feet or not.
