Harsh winter: Niagara Falls becomes largest icy spectacle in over a decade
Explore the stunning award-winning photos and videos from the 'Frozen Falls' contest. This unique event, launched by Niagara Parks, celebrated the incredible ice formations and spectacular winter landscapes created by the cold weather
This winter, Niagara Falls became an impressive ice-covered display, marking the most significant freezing of the area in over a decade. While the falls never fully freeze, the buildup of ice formations created a striking visual, amplified by freezing mist coating the surrounding landscape.

Niagara Parks introduced the Frozen Falls Contest for the first time, inspired by winter’s deep chill.
"It was very cold. The silver lining for us was the amazing ice formations...just a really amazing visual spectacle, when the ice formations build up and give that frozen falls look," said Chris Giles, Niagara Parks' Director of Sales, Marketing and Communications.
The contest celebrated creativity, awarding top photo and video submissions that captured the frozen beauty of the falls. Winners, announced on March 31, received substantial prizes:
1st place: $5,000 (photo and video categories)
2nd place: $2,500
3rd place: $1,500
The falls' icy appearance, often mistaken for being entirely frozen, is an illusion. Despite the cold, water continues to flow beneath the ice, with the freezing mist enhancing the picturesque scene.
The contest showcased how even a harsh winter can highlight the unique beauty of the natural world.
