Photos: Bright auroras light up the sky in Canada and around the world
Bright auroras could be seen for several hours.
On January 19, the night sky lit up for hours during a severe G4 geomagnetic storm. The large solar storm that hit Earth, created auroras that could be seen around the world.
The National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center, or SWPC, which tracked the storm, called the event “the largest solar radiation storm in over 20 years.”
The hours-long event also extended beyond its typical range, making itself visible to people across North America and Europe.
Here are some photos of the event — and if you’d like to learn more about the science behind the solar flare, check out this informative article by Scott Sutherland.
