23 days: Toronto's below-freezing streak comes to an end

The unrelenting cold finally comes to a close for Ontario as the pesky Arctic air finally moves out. Toronto airport rose to above freezing on Tuesday, the first time the temperature reached more than zero degrees in 23 days.

Toronto’s below-freezing streak has come to an end after 23 days.

Pearson International Airport spent the last 23 consecutive days, beginning Jan. 18, below the freezing mark but it wasn’t just a few degrees below. All of Ontario felt extremely cold temperatures, with Pearson hitting a coldest daytime high of -13.3 C and a coldest, overnight low of -20.8 C.

Many locals saw much colder temperatures than that. The normal or seasonal daytime high for Toronto throughout January and February is around -1 C, which is far warmer than any daytime high seen over the last few weeks.

This frigid air that embarked on a journey from the North Pole settled over Central Canada, and didn’t budge for several weeks. The air mass actually brought Bermuda and the Caribbean's coldest temperatures ever over the last week.

Now, looking forward, Toronto has the nicest, seven-day forecast so far this year, and it’s just in time for the Family Day long weekend. The next seven days feature temperatures right around the zero-degree mark.
