40 million caught in major winter storm hitting U.S. East Coast

Blizzard warnings spanned across the United States East coast on Monday, impacting 40 million people and prompting states of emergencies to be declared in major cities.

A major nor'easter is bringing significant impacts to parts of the U.S. East Coast on Monday, including New Jersey, New York City, and Boston.

Blizzard warnings are in effect along the entire coast from Maryland to Maine, covering the cities of Wilmington, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, and Portland, and including large swaths of the Interstate 95 and Route 1 corridors. Overall, about 40 million people live within these blizzard warnings.

This is likely going to end as the largest snowstorm in Philadelphia and New York City since the nor’easter of January 2016.

US East Coast Monday blizzard warnings - Feb. 23, 2026

New York City's mayor, Zohran Mamdani, issued a travel ban across the metropolis on Sunday night, lasting until noon Monday.

Mayor Mamdani also declared a state of emergency for New York City on Sunday afternoon, stating all public schools in the city will be closed Monday and that roads will be closed to non-essential traffic during the city-wide travel ban.

Similarly, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill also declared a statewide state of emergency and travel restrictions.

The worst of the impacts will continue to be felt across the New York City and Boston areas through Monday morning. Over 50 cm of snow has already been reported on Rhode Island Monday morning.

Snowfall rates will gradually begin to taper off Monday afternoon as the storm makes its way into Atlantic Canada, where winter storm warnings area are already in place across all of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, as well as parts of New Brunswick and Newfoundland.
