Alberta to start the Victoria Day long weekend with rain

From Saturday to Sunday, southern Alberta can expect to be peppered in rain and a few thunderstorms

If Alberta felt left out of the thunderstorms currently plaguing Eastern Canada, well, do we have news for you. Isolated thunderstorms are set for Saturday, while Sunday through to Monday will see rain cap off Victoria Day.

On Saturday, western and southern Alberta and eastern B.C. will see storms with heavy rain, strong winds and small hail across the day.

Alberta’s rainy long weekend

Across Alberta, widespread rain will continue from Saturday into Monday, bringing a mix of coverage.

On Saturday, it will be spread out across the province, focusing mainly on central Alberta and around Calgary.

While on Sunday, southern Alberta will experience rain along the U.S. border just south of Calgary with a small amount of snow at the highest elevations.

This will continue through to Monday, southwestern Alberta will have seen the heaviest rain around 20-40 mm, with Calgary seeing 10-20 mm.

However, Calgary could be just north of all the persistent rain, which would reduce the amount Calgary could see overall going into Monday.

Even though some rain has already fallen in the region this month, more rain would still be better for the province. Especially for southwestern Alberta, which was the only region in extreme drought at the end of April, per the Canadian Drought Monitor.

Hopefully, the rain helps the southwest recover from the drought; but not too much rain, of course, as then we’d have a flooding problem.
