Beneficial rain on the way this weekend for parts of B.C.

An unsettled pattern will bring beneficial rains to parts of southern B.C. into this weekend

Some good news is on the horizon for many communities across southern British Columbia as an unsettled pattern promises to bring decent rainfall totals to the region.

June is an important month for rainfall as we head into the peak of wildfire season—especially after the active start we’ve already seen this year.

Most areas still behind average for June

June is usually the wettest month of the year for Kamloops with an average of 39 mm of rain. The city has seen 15 mm of rain so far through June 19, which means we’re still behind average heading into the final stretch of June.

Vancouver finally picked up a touch of measurable rain, ending the city’s driest start to June since 2009. The city’s airport has seen 1.3 mm of rain this month—a far cry from the 51 mm we’d expect in a normal June.

Measurable rain for many areas

Rain that arrived on Friday will continue through the overnight hours into the day Saturday for all of southern B.C. Folks across the South Coast and southern Vancouver Island will see most of their rain Saturday morning before precipitation eases into the afternoon.

BC Precipitation Saturday morning

Precipitation will dissipate in the Okanagan and southeastern B.C. through the afternoon and evening hours on Saturday.

We’ll close out the weekend with a weak low-pressure system on the southern border between B.C. and Alberta. This system will bring more showers from the Okanagan to the Alberta border through the second half of Sunday.

BC Rainfall through Tuesday

All told, we’re looking at widespread 30-50 mm of rain throughout the Interior through Tuesday. Locally higher totals are possible, especially toward Cranbrook and Invermere. Folks closer to the coast can expect general totals of 10-20 mm through the beginning of the week.

Looking ahead, unsettled conditions will continue for the first half of the week with some pop-up showers and thunderstorms across the region.
