Brutal cold meets heavy snow as major winter storm slams southern Quebec
Snow, gusting winds and dangerous wind chills will make travel difficult across much of Quebec through Monday
Southern Quebec is bracing for harsh winter weather as a powerful storm system moves through the area, delivering heavy snowfall, strong winds and severely cold temperatures.
While the system affects millions in eastern North America, Quebec will experience some of its most severe effects between Sunday night and Monday, particularly in the south. Snow will fall throughout the region overnight, growing into Monday morning as the storm tightens its grip.
Unlike many major snowstorms that arrive with milder air, this one comes with a deep Arctic chill. Forecasters warn that gusts of wind chills could reach -30ºC, resulting in potentially dangerous circumstances even as heavy snow continues to fall.

Heavy snow and blowing winds take over Monday
Snowfall is anticipated to pick up across southern Quebec overnight and into Monday, with 1 to 2 centimetres per hour possible in the Montreal area at times. Gusty northeast winds of up to 40 km/h are likely to cause blowing snow and rapidly shifting visibility, especially during heavier bursts.
By the end of the storm, much of the region should have received 10 to 20 centimetres of snow. The highest totals are expected south of Montreal and in the Eastern Townships.

Montreal and Sherbrooke could both get 15 to 20 centimetres, while Gatineau is expected to receive around 15 centimetres. Quebec City is expected to receive closer to 10 centimetres.
Another round of snow is expected Monday afternoon, with locally heavy snow squalls possible. These squalls could cause additional accumulation and reduce visibility during peak travel times.

Dangerous travel and extreme cold linger
Travel conditions are expected to be extremely difficult all through the day Monday. Heavy snowfall, blowing snow and strong winds will make highways and local roads hazardous, especially during periods of low visibility.
The extreme cold will add an extra layer of risk. Wind chills near -30ºC will make outdoor conditions dangerous particularly for anyone exposed for an extended period of time.
By Monday evening, the storm system is anticipated to move east, leaving behind fresh snow and bitterly cold air in southern Quebec. While snowfall will decrease, frigid temperatures continue as the workweek begins.
