Heat wave or hoodie weather? Find out what you will get on Labour Day weekend

This long weekend will feature fall-like and summer weather across Canada. Are you holding onto summer heat? Or, are you eager for the hoodie and flavoured latte season? Read on to find out which side you will see during Labour Day weekend

Everything good must come to an end eventually, and that includes summer.

The upcoming Labour Day long weekend signals the unofficial end of the summer months as we get ready to usher in fall deep into September.

So, the weekend provides people and families with one last chance at some holiday summer fun before going back to the early-morning routines and increasingly shorter days.

This year's long weekend won't feature a one-size-fits-all type of forecast for Canada, however, as some areas will be enjoying summer heat to close out the holiday finale of the season while others will be getting a head start fall with autumn-like conditions.

West takes the heat for summer's last holiday hurrah

Western Canada weather will feature a late-summer heat wave to mark the holiday weekend.

An extended stretch of hot weather is expected from B.C’s Okanagan Valley to the Prairies, even stretching into Northern Canada, through the long weekend.

A steady stretch of 30-degree weather will be found in B.C.'s Interior, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Manitoba will be in the warm sector, too, but temperatures will remain in the upper 20s.

However, periods of precipitation may affect southern B.C. with hit-and-miss rain chances from weak instability on Saturday. The chances increase on Sunday and Monday along the coast with low-pressure system possibly moving into Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

Conditions will remain mostly dry in Northwest Territories and the Prairies for much of the weekend, but rain chances grow on Monday as a cooldown brings back seasonal temperatures to kick off September.

Eastern Canada weather will feature quite the contrast to its Western counterparts, giving the region an early taste of fall and hoodie season.

Ontario and Quebec will see a rocky, and chilly, start to the long weekend, improving at the end of it, though. The early taste of fall will be felt on Friday, especially, with the coldest daytime highs since early June.

On Saturday, the temperatures will sit in in the low 20s for many communities, including Toronto and Ottawa, Ont., and Montreal, Que. Cold air from the northwest is to blame for the late-summer chill.

The cold air mass could generate lake-effect showers off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay on Friday, while a cold front could bring showers in southern and eastern Ontario, as well as southern and eastern Quebec.

The low will be slow-moving, meaning rainfall will linger in eastern Ontario and southern Quebec, and push into New Brunswick on Saturday. Conditions will drying out on Sunday.

Temperatures will climb back to seasonal at the end of the long weekend in Central Canada on Sunday and Monday.

Farther north, an ideal forecast in northern and northwestern Ontario with temperatures remaining comfortable and then warming through the weekend, accompanied by mainly-dry conditions.

Moving east, the Maritimes will see a great start to the long weekend, but rain chances will rise to end it. Expect a cool start in Newfoundland as daytime highs will be in the teens to the low 20s through the weekend.

The Maritimes will be warmer, however, with temperatures staying in the low- to mid-20s for the duration.

But there will be some hiccups. Saturday will be rainy across New Brunswick, and will linger on Sunday and move into parts of Nova Scotia.

There will be some shower chances in Newfoundland, but it will remain mostly dry throughout the weekend.

We should note there is some uncertainty with the rainfall chances and how organized the low-pressure system will get over the Maritimes. However, it looks to be weaker but unsettled weather is more likely.
