Keep the A/C on: October heat wave brings summer back to Ontario

It may be October, but it will feel more like mid-July in the coming days across Ontario.

Summer weather is keeping a firm grip on Ontario, despite it no longer being summer. The first weekend of October will have folks turning their air conditioners back on as a fall heat wave settles over the province.

A region of high pressure has settled over the United States East Coast, pulling up warm air from the south and into the Great Lakes region.

Daytime temperatures will sit 5-15 degrees above seasonal for the next several days, rivalling previous record-breaking October temperatures.

Temperatures soar on Saturday

The warm southerly air will make its way into Ontario on Saturday, making it feel less like a fall weekend and more like a mid-summer weekend.

Despite being the first day of this short-lived heat event, Saturday will likely be the warmest day of the weekend. Daytime temperatures across the province are expected to reach the mid- to high 20s.

In southern Ontario, there will also be a humidex factor to make the heat feel even more blistering. From Windsor to Ottawa, temperatures will feel like the 30s.

Windsor and other parts of southwestern Ontario will be bearing the worst of the heat wave, with highs approaching 30 degrees—and that's not including the humidex!

If temperatures do reach 30 degrees in Windsor, it would be the warmest October day the city has seen since 2019.

Be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen if you're heading to downtown Toronto for the first two Blue Jays playoff games on Saturday and Sunday.

The high pressure bringing in the heat will also make sure the skies stay clear over the weekend, which means the Rogers Centre Dome will most likely be open.

What's next?

The heat over the province will help to fuel thunderstorms across northwestern Ontario over the weekend.

Forecasters are watching for the storm track to make its way over the rest of the province on Tuesday or Wednesday, which will break the heat.

Chilly rains will help to make the midweek feel like proper fall. There's also a chance for a rumble or two of thunder as a cold front sweeps over the province.
