Metro schools to close early as region prepares for stormy weather

Snowfall warning in effect for eastern, southern Newfoundland

Schools along the northeast Avalon will close two hours early on Tuesday, as the region is forecast to be hit with heavy snow and high winds.

A snowfall warning is in effect for eastern and southern Newfoundland, with amounts between 15 and 25 centimetres expected.

Winds will gust around 60 kilometres-per-hour, up to 80 along coastal regions.

The combination is expected to make for reduced or zero visibility later in the day.

Snowfall rates could range between two and five centimetres an hour. The weather warning from Environment Canada warns to avoid non-essential travel and outdoor activities.

Some schools — including those along the southern Avalon — are closed for the day as of 6:30 a.m.
