Powerful winds whip into Saskatchewan, risk of 90 km/h gusts

Strong winds are expected to develop Thursday following a powerful cold front moving through southern Saskatchewan

The ridge driving this week’s extreme heat in British Columbia will also contribute to wind gusts of up to 90 km/h in southern Saskatchewan on Thursday. Wind warnings are in effect.

A low-pressure system will quickly develop during the day, positioned between the high pressure in B.C. and the main low over Hudson Bay. This setup will tighten the pressure gradient, producing strong northwesterly wind gusts into the evening.

"Damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur," says Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in the warning. "Gusty winds can damage soft shelters, tents and awnings at outdoor events. High winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur."

Drivers are also urged to brace for changing road conditions due to high winds.

These winds are expected to move south of the border by late Thursday, bringing cooler air in their wake.
