Ready? Seven provinces may see snow before Thanksgiving

Portions of seven provinces and all three territories will see flakes fly before Thanksgiving arrives

The seasons are changing in a hurry as we dive into the month of October, and it’s never too early to start talking about snow across the country.

Cold air dipping south toward the lower latitudes could bring snow to seven of Canada’s ten provinces over the next week, with some communities enjoying a touch of fresh snow before Thanksgiving arrives.

Snow began across the Far North all the way back in late August, and bouts of wintry precipitation have continued throughout the three territories ever since.

Portions of British Columbia and Alberta have already seen blankets of fresh snow coat the highest elevations of each province—and there’s more on the way heading into this weekend.

That’s three territories and two provinces with snow on the ground or on the way. Where next?

A ridge of high pressure parked over the Prairies has kept things unseasonably warm to begin October. We’ll see this ridge finally break down and move off to the east, allowing cooler air to sweep into the region.

Communities across northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba may see a rain-snow mix as early as the beginning of next week, bringing some conversational flakes to the region.

Portions of far northern Ontario, northern Quebec, as well as Newfoundland and Labrador may get in on some light snow or flurries over the coming week, as well.

Many communities on the Prairies average 5-15 cm of snow through a normal October. Calgary’s monthly average comes in around 12 cm, while Brandon, Man., typically picks up around 6 cm.

Significant amounts of wintry precipitation tend to hold off farther east. October averages under 2 cm in both Ottawa and Montreal.
