Clocks will 'fall back' in a few weeks. Here's what you need to know

With summer holidays drawing to a close, our attention is slowly turning toward the upcoming fall season.

In a few weeks, Daylight Saving Time will end and we will set our clocks back an hour.

Here’s what you need to know.

When do we change our clocks back one hour?

Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends on November 2, 2025 at 2 a.m. local time.

Why do we change the time on our clocks?

Daylight time means changing clocks to better use daylight in summer, delaying evening darkness.

Although often linked to farmers, DST began as an energy-saving measure during the First World War.

Who observes DST?

As of 1987, daylight time isn’t federally mandated; that’s why not everyone in Canada will be changing the clocks.

Famously, Saskatchewan does not observe, meaning it has the same time as Calgary in the winter but Winnipeg in the summer

The one exception is the Lloydminster area, which joins in on the time change.

The Yukon, parts of Northern B.C., eastern Quebec, some regions in Ontario, and most of Nunavut also do not adjust the clocks twice a year.

Will I gain or lose sleep?

In the fall, you ‘gain’ an hour of sleep. When we spring forward in the fall, we lose that hour.

Will DST ever end?

Love it or hate it, the biannual change [doesn’t seem to be going anywhere] quickly. Both Ontario and B.C. have passed bills to throw out the time change, but they won't go through with it unless neighbouring states and provinces make the change as well.
