3.7 magnitude earthquake near Orillia, Ont., shaking felt in Toronto

No damage reported after minor 3.7 magnitude earthquake hits Ontario's cottage country. Widespread light shaking reported

Late Tuesday night, a minor earthquake shook parts of Ontario.

Just before 11 p.m. ET, Earthquakes Canada confirmed a 3.7 magnitude quake struck Ramara, located 23 km east of Orillia and about 100 km north of Toronto. The quake occurred at a depth of 5 kilometres.

Over 2,300 residents reported feeling it, from Toronto and Hamilton to Belleville, Kingston, and as far east as Ottawa.

No damage has been reported, and none would be expected, Earthquakes Canada said.

Many took to social media, noting the quake as the latest challenge for the region after dealing with recent significant snow and a dangerous cold snap. Some even reported hearing a loud bang.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) measured the earthquake at a 4.1 magnitude.
