Severe storms leads to probable tornado in Quebec, its second in 2025

Quebec's likely second tornado of the year was documented on Saturday during a bout of severe weather

The long weekend got off to a stormy start in Central Canada with thunderstorms pushing through Ontario and Quebec.

Parts of the region experienced severe weather, resulting in what will likely be verified as Quebec's second tornado of the year on Saturday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) released a summary Sunday of the severe weather that has occurred in the province since Friday evening, mentioning it received footage of what "appears to be a tornado" near Howick, Que., around 7 p.m. on Saturday.

"An investigation will be conducted to confirm whether it was indeed a tornado and, if so, to determine its intensity. At this time, no damage has been reported," said ECCC, in the summary.

Because it hasn't been verified at this time, there is no designated rating for the probable tornado.

Aside from the tornado report, ECCC received accounts of other types of severe weather including heavy rain, hail and a downed tree in Papineauville as a result of strong winds. Small hail was reported Saturday in the Outaouais and Montérégie regions.

Since Friday evening, Sherbrooke and surrounding areas received between 50 and 70 millimetres of rain, while the Mauricie, Lac-Saint-Jean, and Bois-Francs regions recorded 40 to 50 millimetres. Some roads were partially flooded due to the heavy rain.

Quebec's first tornado of the year occurred on April 29, near Saint-Zénon, Que., south of Saint-Michel-des-Saints. Rated as an EF-1, it was also Quebec's first April twister since 1996 and Canada's strongest to date in 2025.
