St. John’s has endured a February for the history books
This was the city’s snowiest month in living memory
Folks in St. John’s endure some of the highest snowfall totals of any major city across the country.
Even with that lofty reputation, this month’s relentless snows managed to tip the scales into record territory.

February 2026 has been the snowiest month in living memory across Newfoundland’s capital city.
St. John’s has picked up 178.2 cm of snow through Feb. 27, setting multiple records along the way.
This is now the snowiest February on record, beating out the 170 cm that fell in Feb. 2006. It’s also the snowiest month in living memory, surging past the 173 cm that fell during Dec. 2000.
Persistent bouts of snow throughout the month helped shatter these impressive records.
St. John’s Airport has recorded measurable snow on 22 out of 26 days so far this month. Six of those days witnessed 10+ cm of snowfall, with Feb. 2 notching 43.6 cm of accumulation alone.
We’ve seen 385 cm of accumulation at the airport so far this season. That’s a long way away from the snowiest winter on record. The 2000-2001 season ended with an astounding total of 648 cm.
Snow is far from over in Canada’s easternmost city. March, April, and May collectively average an additional 96 cm of accumulation during a typical season in St. John’s.
