A powerful ridge of high pressure over eastern North America sent temperatures soaring to record territory across Quebec on Sunday.

Numerous communities broke their record for the hottest October day ever observed.

Temperatures soar up to 15 degrees above seasonal

An exceptional and unprecedented round of heat bathed Quebec to close out the weekend, sending temperatures as much as 15 degrees above seasonal in some communities.

Montreal October temperature record

The culprit was a significant ridge of high pressure parked over the eastern half of the country. Temperatures in Quebec and neighbouring Ontario were hotter than many cities south of the border on Sunday.

Montreal-Trudeau International Airport reached a high of 29.9°C on Sunday, marking the location’s hottest-ever temperature recorded during the month of October. The previous record was a 29.3°C afternoon back in October 2023.

Quebec October temperature records

Monthly temperature records also fell in Val d’Or (28.8°C) and Saguenay (29.2°C).

Gatineau made it up to 30.3°C on Sunday afternoon, falling 0.6°C shy of the city’s October record set back in 2023.

Folks shouldn’t expect the heat to last much longer.

Readings will return into the mid- to upper-20s during the day Monday. A cold front is set to sweep across the province on Tuesday, dragging in cooler temperatures and a risk for unsettled weather—including the possibility of a few thunderstorms.
